SPRING HILL, Tn. – John Maher Builders Inc. has built its reputation by building the best-quality homes in Middle Tennessee. Now it’s adding something fun.
JMB’s first Design Center is now open in the Port Royal Road Business Park.
For the past two years, Laurie Boughner has guided new JMB homebuyers through the myriad of decisions needed to customize and personalize their new homes. Depending upon the new home’s construction status when purchased, buyers can select everything from the exterior brick, trim, paint and stain to interior paint, flooring, cabinetry, granite, hardware, plumbing, and lighting.
While JMB has always offered a wide selection of both standard and upgraded finishes in its semi-custom homes, with the Design Center’s opening all of those options have grown.
Boughner, a Spring Hill-based interior decorator, has transformed a large sunny space in Suite 8, Building B of the business park into a full-service design space. The center features the deep crown molding standard in all JMB homes. The walls are painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Agreeable Gray, a contemporary shade that has quickly become a favorite of JMB’s buyers.
Installed in one corner of the center are the new white Shaker-style kitchen cabinets the company recently added to its lineup. The tile selection has expanded from 20 to 45 choices; a five or six new granite selections also are being added.
On another wall, sample displays of stained cedar hang alongside each of the Hardi siding and shingle selections offered. Standard and upgraded light fixtures are installed so customers can see the difference between available finishes — an antique bronze and a brushed nickel, for instance.
Custom-made display spaces for hardwood, carpet and other products are filled with more samples.
JMB founder and President John Maher seriously began discussing the Design Center idea with Boughner early this year.
Boughner, who contracts her services to JMB through her company Design39 Interiors, explains she had the vision to “create a space with a home-like environment where clients can start envisioning and personalizing their new home.”
“The Design Center allows them to see everything we offer in a relaxed environment,” says Boughner, who selected a large rustic farm table to be the center’s “command center.”
Coffee, cold drinks and snacks are available. As mom to three children under age 10 herself, she has stocked the Design Center with coloring books, crayons and other kid-friendly diversions to keep youngsters occupied while their parents design their family’s new home.
Psychology plays a big role in Boughner’s job, she acknowledges. It’s a science she honed for eight years as a registered nurse working in intensive care before she turned in her stethoscope for a color wheel several years ago.
“I big part of my job is reassuring the client that everything’s going to be OK,” she says. Those clients run the gamut from first-time homebuyers and those relocating to Middle Tennessee from across the country to downsizers who want the quality they’ve come to appreciate in their Brentwood and Franklin homes but prefer a smaller lot and first-floor master suite.
Boughner goes out of her way to accommodate homebuyers. For example, when a couple recently flew in and out of Nashville for a weekend house hunt, after they signed a contract for a new Wade’s Grove home, she changed her schedule to help them make their selections before their departing flight, saving them another trip.
Boughner encourages clients to drive around JMB developments like Wade’s Grove to help them visualize how different brick, stone and siding samples look on real homes. Often she’s behind the wheel herself.
“Like everything with John Maher Builders, it always goes back to the customer,” she says. “If we can do it and it doesn’t affect the footprint, we’ll try to accommodate it.”
“John has great, great customers. They’re so easy to work with,” she says. And often they know exactly what they want before they sit down with her.
With so many people following Pinterest, watching HGTV and devouring shelter magazines and websites, it’s vital that builders stay abreast of the trends and offer what today’s home buyers want, Boughner says. The Design Center was conceived to honor that.
But Boughner, like Maher, knows that staying classic will always be in style.
“My job is to know what’s trending, and to know how that plays with what’s classic,” she says.
