Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop celebrated the opening of its newest location with a ribbon cutting Friday in partnership with Williamson, Inc.

The Knoxville-based pie shop has grown to 27 locations across the Southeast in six years. They specialize in made-from-scratch pies in a variety of flavors and sizes.

With a fondness for baking pies and a desire to share their time-honored family recipes, founders Scott and Meredith Layton opened the first Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop location in the Bearden district of Knoxville in 2012.

“We’re just so thankful to be making friends across Tennessee and now across the Southeast,” Layton said.

Surrounded by many friends and family on Friday, local franchisee owners Ken and Chris Smith shared they wanted to own a Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop because of its community focus.

“It was love at first bite,” Chris Smith said. “The shop itself is about community, about giving to the community, and building relationships. That’s what we wanted for a family business.”

The couple also owns another Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop in Murfreesboro, which is a first, according to company founder Meredith Layton.

Family is a big part of both stores. The Smiths’ daughter-in-law serves as store manager, and their son helps them bake the pies. Even the Smiths’ grandchildren lend a helping hand.

“It provides, essentially, a way for our kids and grandkids to make a living,” Ken Smith said. “It also keeps the relationships going.”

The team members, who also work at both locations, also feel like family to the couple, Chris Smith explained.

“They have become like family,” she said. “This is an awesome group and awesome team. We all have fun and enjoy working together.”

Franktown Open Hearts is a nonprofit that Chris Smith partnered with for the ribbon cutting, and last week, 20-percent of sales were donated to the nonprofit.

She hopes customers walk out of the store feeling better than when they came in.

“When you walk in the doors, no matter what day you’re having, we want you to leave feeling better,” Chris Smith said. “Sure, we want you to have our pie, but what’s more important to us is you as a person to walk away feeling blessed that you have walked in the doors.”

Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is located at 5050 Carothers Parkway, suite 104.
