Murals & More LLC

Do you have a blank wall or space in your home? Do you always see the side of a building and think, “that needs to be transformed”? Well, we may have the answer for you. Meet Michael Cooper, owner and founder of Murals & More, an accomplished decorative painter that has transformed many surfaces into amazing works of art.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you grow up?  How long have you lived in the area?

Originally I am from Memphis, TN. My wife Mickie and I have now lived in Franklin for over 25 years. Our home AND studio are in Dallas Downs.

What is your business and how/why did you start your business?

I design and hand-paint interior and exterior large-scale murals, graphics, and high-end decorative finishes, anywhere in the country. I have painted everything from replicating finishes on historic chairs at Carnton Plantation, to painting faux marble on the façade at The Frist. I’ve created small murals in children’s rooms to miles of finishes on 50’ retaining walls on highways! Painting artwork on bridges, buildings, ceilings, overpasses – piece of cake! My BFA from Memphis State University gave me the skills I needed to specialize in realistic representational art, with a focus on Trompe L’oeil, which means “to fool the eye”. Mickie just makes sure I’m actually out there painting!

Tell us about the events that led up to where your company is now.

When I grew tired of designing and selling in the Office Interiors Business, I started looking for other opportunities. When Mickie and I first met, she saw a mural I had painted in my apartment (which she at first thought was wallpaper!) and suggested that maybe I should paint murals for a living, as I was pretty good at that. I took her advice, and have been painting professionally ever since, which is now going on close to 30 years. I probably need to take her advice more often, come to think of it!

What is unique about your business (what sets you apart from the rest)?

Honestly, for whatever reason, I’m just really good at what I do. I am very detail-oriented and feel that I have a good eye for what looks real. I listen to my clients closely to pick up on exactly what it is that they are actually looking for, to try to address those needs within the artwork. I don’t approach a project with any preconceived ideas. This is THEIR wall, not mine!

What is one piece of advice you’d give to members in the business community?

Simply do what you say you’re going to do. It’s that easy.

Why did you choose Williamson County to open your business?

We came here initially for the schools and have stayed because of the community. It still has that small-town feel, with all of the big-city amenities.

In your own words, why is it great to do business in Williamson County, TN? How has being a part of the overall business community in Williamson County helped you?

Having that small-town feel means that everyone knows everyone. References and recommendations happen all of the time. The same person that you work with for that residential project or small faux finish can lead you to a huge commercial project, just with a phone call.

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice (general or specific) can you offer to the readers?

Again, just do what you say you’re going to do. If you make an appointment, show up, and show up on time! It is simply amazing that so many referrals I’ve given have fallen through because the person didn’t show up for an appointment. How can someone do that?! Clients also appreciate honesty. There have been many times when I’ve told a potential client that they really didn’t need a mural – just paint the wall.

Why did you choose to be a Williamson, Inc. Member?

What better way to know who’s here, and who’s moving into town? It’s a great place to network, to make great contacts as well as make new friends.

How can readers take advantage of your products and services?

Call me. We’ll talk. If you need custom artwork or finishes for your home, for your church or business, your Cardiac facility or Dental office, for your studio or even for your suite at Bridgestone, give me a shout. There’s a good chance I’ve painted one before. And if I haven’t, I’d love to add it to my portfolio.
