We sat down with Brandan Chasteen, Williamson, Inc. member and ambassador, to learn more about his 15 years in the Army, his passion for helping others and how he has excelled in Williamson County. Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area?
I have grown up a little bit of everywhere and have Family all over the United States. To keep it easy I claim Chattanooga, TN to be home. However, I did most of my ‘growing up’ in places like Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Fort Campbell, Kentucky during my 15 years in the Army. After transitioning to my new civilian life and a lifetime of searching for the perfect place to live forever, I can say I have found that place right here in Franklin, TN.
How and why did you first get started with Edward Jones? Tell us a little about them.
Leaving the Army was a major transition for me. It was abrupt to say the least. I was still in Afghanistan and trying to interview for jobs at the same time I was traveling all across that region of the World. I ended up with several great offers for jobs in everything from the financial sector to manufacturing to consulting. I met an Edward Jones advisor during my MBA program and asked him to manage some of my investments while I was in Afghanistan. While I was communicating my big transition and changing plans (just like we all should with our financial advisors ((Shameless Plug)) he told me I should consider the Edward Jones opportunity. During the interview process I appreciated their passion for their clients, their employees, and my family. I haven’t regretted my decision for a moment.
How does your background help you excel in this industry?
I had a client call me last December (a bad month for markets if you can recall). She was really upset about her 401k with her employer and how much value she had lost in just a few short weeks. She was really scared, emotional, and ready to react out of fear and panic. I was able to remind her we had a plan and a strategy that was built with moments like December in mind. I was able to communicate with her, maintain my own calm in a high-pressure situation, and be the leader she needed at that moment. The few minutes we spent on the phone discussing her strategy saved her from a large mistake.
This is exactly what I did with my Soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, amongst other places. I developed strategies that were designed to decisively achieve success against enemies of the United States. The stakes were high and when life or livelihood is on the line you have to be able to have your head about you and be ready to manage the emotions of the people you are working with (You have to keep them focused on the task at hand, the mission, and the work that has to get done). I have seen a lot of loss, heartache, and other dark moments. I have also experienced the best of times, great victories, and incredible heroic achievements. Having such unique experiences in my life, I am confident and prepared for my career now and capable to deeply serve my clients, build strategies, guide people through the best times and the worst times in their life, and help them decisively WIN everything they intend.
Who should take advantage of your services?
I help the SERIOUS LONG-TERM INVESTOR. Becoming a client is a 2-way interview. While potential clients are deciding if they like me, I am doing the same. I work with people that aspire to be better than they are right now. I serve givers, not a takers. Lastly, I work with people that are fun to be around (I never want to dread coming to work because I have to see “that guy”).
Common goals for individuals I serve are centered around retirement, investing for major purchases (one of my clients is saving to purchase a franchise), college savings for kids and grandkids, among other things. A major differentiator (and a major reason I chose Jones) is there is never a monetary threshold for you and I to work together. You will get my full 1-on-1 client experience whether you start with $50 or $5,000,000.
I love to serve businesses and business owners. They require different thoughts and complex and layered strategies. Often times, I go deeper than others in my field by setting up mastermind groups with the business owner, their CPA, and myself and get us all in the same room. The layers that include the business, the owner(s), and the employees, make a sound strategy all the more important. The economic factors, exit strategy, and layered/complex business plans make strategic thinking all the more important. I love all my clients, but business owners hold a special place in my heart.
What sets you apart from the rest?
I grew up without money. My mom was a single mom with 4 kids. She never had enough money for a professional to give her the time of day she deserved. We never would have been wealthy but there are definitely things that could have been different if someone had taken time to give her advice. I have had tremendous life experiences in the Army. I have come close to losing my life countless times. My experiences are where my differences start.
Another differentiator is my understanding that the most important thing in this World is the people around us and our own happiness. I am never willing to compromise my integrity to make a quick sell. I will work tirelessly and go as deep as possible to make sure every dollar you have is working hard for you and every “pie-in-the-sky dream” you have is part of the strategy we build. I will do the same for the person getting started with $50 just as I would for the retiree with $5,000,000. Not only is that how I feel in my heart, that is the foundation on which Edward Jones was built.

How has being a part of the overall business community in Williamson County helped you?
It has taught me so much about the great people that make up this community. I am inspired by the passion, ambition, grit, and heart of every person I meet. I am proud to be a part of this community and have so many friends and great relationships all over town.
Why did you choose to become a member of Williamson, Inc.? How has your membership benefited you?
I was encouraged by a mentor to join my local Chamber of Commerce. I can say that my expectations have been surpassed. While I have clients and have grown my business from people I have met at Williamson Inc., more importantly, I have made incredible friends through it.
Given your expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice (general or specific) can you offer to the readers?
Get an advisor and don’t disqualify yourself. In other words, don’t think you need to wait or don’t have enough money to talk to someone. Advice and education should never cost you money. I meet people often that ask, “why an advisor vs. technology apps/platforms?”. My advice is to explore and leverage both. If your advisor isn’t leveraging every tool available, at least exploring every tool, to save you the most money and make you the most money, you should get a second opinion. When picking an advisor, pick someone you can see sticking around with you through the rest of your life, or at least a huge part of it. You want the person you trust now being the same person your family is trusting when you are much older. Nobody should be meeting a new advisor on their death bed or anywhere close to it.
