Traffic Signal Operational Change – Cool Springs Boulevard at I-65 Southbound Entrance Ramp

Drivers will be seeing a traffic signal operational change beginning August 14th at the Cool Springs Boulevard/I-65 entrance ramp. The current signal operation provides for a protected left turn phase from westbound Cool Springs Boulevard onto the entrance ramp for I-65 southbound. Due to continual growth and from citizen requests, the signal operation was analyzed to see if improvements could be made for this movement. The Engineering Department studied and verified that in the current lane configuration, and with adequate sight distance that is available, a Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) for the left turn movement could be implemented to help improve traffic flow, reducing vehicle delay and emissions.

The FYA allows for a permitted left turn onto the southbound I-65 entrance ramp when opposing eastbound through vehicles and crossing pedestrians are not in conflict with the safe execution of the left turn movement. While not anticipated, the use of this configuration will allow restriction of the left turn movement should a need be identified.
