Skanska Receives National Excellence in Construction Award from Associated Builders and Contractors

Skanska’s Nashville office has received two National Excellence in Construction awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors for the LifeWay Christian Resource New Headquarters and the Cordell Hull State Office Building.

LifeWay Headquarters earned a National Excellence in Construction® Eagle Award in the General Contractor Commercial – $25 million to $100 million category.

The Cordell Hull building renovation and parking garage has also earned a National Excellence in Construction® Pyramid Award from in the General Contractor Historical Restoration/Renovation – $25 million to $100 million category. Representatives from Skanska received these honors during ABC’s 29th annual Excellence in Construction® Awards gala at ABC Convention 2019 in Long Beach, Calif., on March 27.

“Our project teams are extremely honored to receive two such distinguished awards from the ABC community,” said Skanska General Manager and Executive Vice President Dennis Georgatos. “We are dedicated to ensuring exceptional results for our customers and the Nashville community. This award really honors and recognizes that commitment.”

The Cordell Hull renovation took a historic state office building that was once deemed obsolete and transformed it into Tennessee legislators’ new home. More than 10,000 tons of metal, wood, concrete and other materials were recycled during construction, for 94 percent landfill waste diversion.

LifeWay Christian Resources’ new headquarters was designed and constructed to last 100-plus years. Skanska supported this goal by focusing on quality materials and construction techniques, along with space flexibility. The 277,000-square-foot facility houses approximately 1,100 corporate employees, as well as a retail store serving downtown Nashville.

“We are proud to honor Skanska with a National Excellence in Construction® Eagle Award, and a National Excellence in Construction® Pyramid Award,” said 2019 ABC National Chair Tony Rader, telecom vice president of National Roofing Partners, Coppell, Texas. “The LifeWay Christian Resources New Headquarters and the Cordell Hull State Office Building Renovation and Parking Garage show not only the exceptional talent in our industry, but the overall commitment to building safely, on time and on budget. Skanska’s breadth of skills and craftsmanship greatly benefits the merit shop construction industry.”

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year’s panel included representatives from the Building Owners and Managers Association International, the Smithsonian Facilities Construction Division, the Construction Management Association of America, Engineering News-Record, Design-Build Institute of America, and various construction-related firms nationwide.
