On-site work will begin after July 4 on 231 Public Square, a $14 million project involving the adaptive reuse of a downtown Franklin building to offer office and retail space once completed in the second quarter of 2017.

A ceremonial groundbreaking will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 27.

To undergo a major exterior retrofit that will yield a neo-traditional design, 231 (pictured) will include a rooftop patio offering 360-degree views of downtown Franklin.

Leasing for the future space in the building, commonly referred to as the First Tennessee Bank building, is underway.

Anchoring the northeast quadrant of the Public Square, the building was constructed in the 1970s.

D9HP LLC is the developer and is billing the project and unmatched in “size or scope” compared to similar previous Franklin projects, according to a release.

“This groundbreaking will be a true celebration for our downtown community,” Brian Schiedemeyer, D9HP co-principal with developer Bernie Butler, said in the release. “231 Public Square will be a centerpiece we can all be proud of, using history as our roadmap and complementing it with Class A office space and destination-dining options. We are not sparing any expenses in making it the best contribution to the district that it can possibly be.”
